Happy 79th Anniversary, BNI! Stop Funding Coal Energy Now!

Jakarta, 4 July 2025 – Coinciding with BNI's 79th anniversary, Enter Nusantara, Climate Rangers Jakarta, and the #BersihkanBankmu Coalition presented a "GIFT" in the form of a peaceful demonstration urging BNI to immediately stop funding coal-fired power plants that damage the environment. This call is intended to encourage BNI customers not to be involved and to continue monitoring BNI's activities in environmental damage.

The latest data from the 2025 Fossil Fuel Divestment Scorecard report from the Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED) shows that Indonesian banks still finance 12% of coal projects in Southeast Asia. Although the global trend is shifting towards renewable energy, total funding for coal projects in Southeast Asia over the past eight years has reached USD 32.48 billion (around IDR 535.92 trillion), with Indonesia as the largest recipient. The report also highlights that three major Indonesian banks, namely Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), and Bank Mandiri, do not yet have policies to stop financing coal-fired power plant projects.

“We are taking this action not only to make demands, but also to bring hope for a better future. Bank BNI cannot continue to hide its role in financing coal-fired power plants that damage the environment. BNI Bank must immediately establish clear policies and a 'road map' to stop financing dirty industries and immediately switch to optimizing renewable energy financing. Because the public has the right to know where their money is being channeled. Is it for a clean future, or to accelerate the destruction of our earth?" said Ramadhan, Action Coordinator of Enter Nusantara.

This appeal is based on deep concern for the collective safety of the climate, air, and healthy and decent living conditions throughout Indonesia. We are already feeling the widespread impact of the climate crisis. By financing coal-fired power plants, BNI is not only damaging an environment that is deteriorating day by day, but also accelerating the climate crisis, which ultimately harms society the most, especially marginalized groups.

Our money is our action for a better future for the earth!
